A woman sat down next to him, and he shifted his position. I got up and spoke to a friend of Pamela’s. She was the mother of a girl who was in the class below me. The mother had dark hair and bangs, and she was wearing a suit. She told me that Sara, her daughter, really looked up to me.

Sara says that she and her friends took a vote and that you’re the older girl they’d most like to be.

That’s flattering, I said.

It is, she said. She smiled a social smile. She had a little smear of lipstick on her teeth.

I hear you have a very cute boyfriend, she said.

Who the fuck is your daughter? I thought. Some kind of spy?

He is cute, but actually, he’s sick right now. He’s in the hospital, I said.

Oh dear. What’s the matter?

He’s in a coma.

As a waiter came by I took a glass of champagne from his tray. I took a long sip.

That’s awful, she said. She appeared concerned.

We looked into each other’s eyes for a moment. I noticed that her eyes looked much older than the rest of her face. Not the skin around her eyes, but the eyes themselves. It was like she was looking out from behind one of those gorilla masks, only her face was smooth and almost attractive. But her eyes darted around through a couple of holes, and they were shadowy, like the eyes in an old movie.

Then she lowered her voice and squinted at me.

Tell me, she said, was it drugs?

I tried to see the space between her mask and her eyes, but I couldn’t.

Yeah, I said. Lots of drugs.
